Facebook - Logged out for Lent

Facebook began in 2004 as a social networking site for college students and quickly grew into a nationwide phenomenon with more than 175 million members. The idea of giving up Facebook for Lent was started a few years ago by students at Christian colleges.

Lent began Feb. 25 and ends on Easter, April 12. Although traditions vary from church to church, most churches encourage parishioners to either give something up or take something on for the Lenten season, echoing the period Jesus spent in the desert fasting and enduring temptations of Satan.

Sunflowers and Shadows

Blake's Sunflower
by Elizabeth Smart
Why did Blake say 'Sunflower weary of time'?
Every time I see them they seem to say
Now! with a crash of cymbals!
Very pleased and positive
and absolutely delighting
in their own round brightness.

Quote of the Day

Horton Foote with his daughter Hallie Foote

"I believe very deeply in the human spirit and I have a sense of awe about it because I don’t know how people carry on. What makes the difference in people? What is it? I’ve known people that the world has thrown everything at to discourage them, to kill them, to break their spirit. And yet something about them retains a dignity. They face life and don’t ask quarters." — Horton Foote

It is obvious from my amateurish blog that I so admired Horton Foote and will truly miss him. Isn't that strange? That someone we never even met in person can influence and affect our lives? Not only was Horton Foote a talented writer, his humanity and his human-ness and his caring was so very evident. I'm sure that I am not the only one who never actually met him who will deeply miss him. But then there are many I have not known on a personal level who have moved me and I dare say, changed my life.

Friday Finds - Should Be Reading

I so much enjoyed Nancy Horan's novel about Frank Lloyd Wright (Loving Frank) and T. C. Boyle's fictional novel The Women sounds very interesting. This is definitely on my To Read List.

Allergies!

When we first moved to Seguin and visited Ranft Appliances to purchase a refrigerator, Mr. Ranft told us that Seguin was the Allergy Capital of the Nation. Well, I don't know about that distinction - but this dry season does seem to produce a lot of sneezing, itchy eyes, sore throats - pollen everywhere!

At the Chamber of Commerce General Membership meeting, County Judge Mike Wiggins reported that the 'state of Guadalupe County' is good, which was heartening to hear in this time of financial hard times and insecurity.
