Guadalupe County Veterans Memorial

The Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the County Courthouse is lovely - and it is so touching to read all of the veterans' names on the brick walk. This memorial is dedicated to Guadalupe County citizens who died in World War I, WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam.

This site is maintained by American Legion Post 245, Seguin.

O God by whose mercy the faith departed find rest,

look kindly upon your departed veterans

who gave their lives in the service of their country.

Grant that through the passion, death and resurrection of your Son

they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom

and rejoice in you with your saints forever.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Downtown Saturday Morning

Except for ChiroJava - early in the morning on a Saturday - everything is just 'waking up' downtown.

Locally Grown

Every Saturday (except on Saturday, February 21st), one can purchase locally grown produce in downtown City Park.

How fortunate we are!

The Book Club

A group of Seguin ladies formed a book club (called The Book Club) more than twenty years ago; some of these ladies have been in the club since its inception. I've only been a member for probably three or four years. There have been some exceptional books on our Book List. This year:
The Madonnas of Lenningrad by Debra Dean; The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahire; The Night Journey by Elizabeth Cook; A Fine Balance by Robinson Mistry; The Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore; Loving Frank by Nancy Horan (this is the April selection).

On Sunday, February 1, our minister, Pastor Steve Purdy used an illustration from our club's February book (Same Kind of Different as Me) in his sermon to emphasize our responsibility for one another - "becoming teammates" is how Reverend Purdy said it.
Several months ago I saw an interview on the Biography Channel with Ron Hall and Denver Moore; it was most touching.
At the close of Rev. Purdy's sermon, he quoted the prayer given by the Reverend Joseph Lowery on Inauguration Day: "And now, Lord, in the complex area of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance. And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold onto the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family..."
A good lesson there. And a good Book Club!

Buying books - for a good cause

Each year the Seguin Education Foundation collects gently used books for a fundraiser that benefits the Seguin Independent School District. Of course, this sale also benefits Readers! And if one wishes, after reading the books purchased at the Fair, just donate the books the next year for another reader to enjoy. What better way to help the Seguin Education Foundation fulfill a most worthwhile mission??!!
The Seguin Education Foundation is a non-profit educational organization made up of business, community, and education leaders who work toward the mission of generating and distributing resources to enrich teaching, inspire learning, and enhance opportunities for students enrolled in the Seguin Independent School District.

Lot for Sale - Donkey Not Included

This donkey is owned by a fella who lives near us. The lot is in the East Hill Subdivision (next to our Sagewood neighborhood). Such a lovely sight amid suburban life.
Excerpt from G. K. Chesterton's poem The Donkey
...For I also had my hour--
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout around my head
and palms about my feet.
